Day 1 – Tuesday 9th April 2024

In recent years, sustainability has become a very important factor for the products and processes development. However, currently through the standardized LCA methodology (Life Cycle Assessment) it is only possible to evaluate the impacts of products and processes currently on the market or ready for the commercialization. There is a need to overcome this limit, introducing the concept of systematic innovation and technology transfer within LCA analyses. All this can be possible by integrating the classic inventory definition methods and approaches with a prospective vision of the product and process inventory. By extrapolating information on possible future technologies from patents, it is possible to know in advance what the impacts of future products and processes will be.

Eco-design to support additive manufacturing is a complex problem due to the relationships between powders, laser technology and lightweight design.

The choice of the production process is fundamental due to the impacts of the atomizer, as is the dosage between the virgin powders (obtained from the atomization of the mineral), the recycled ones (from the atomization of the scrap) and the reused ones (recovered from previous prints). At the same time, lightweight design is also a key to sustainability, but its use must be considered based on the type of powder.

The intervention aims to shed light on eco-design for additive manufacturing, addressing the problem of complexity at a theoretical and practical level. Parametric models, industrial applications, use of software will be analyzed from this perspective.

We present a dual-purpose system to purify exhaust fumes and recover airborne substances without adding water or chemical additives. This technology favors the condensation of vapors, obtaining a liquid aerosol and a liquid film on cold surfaces. The unit can be closed-loop and adaptable to existing production equipment. A high-efficiency cyclone collects the condensed aerosol in the airstream.

The environmental impact of industrial sites such as refineries, production sites, purification plants and MSW landfills has long since become a non-negligible problem. The pressing need to curb climate-changing emissions puts both research centers and stakeholders in the position of having to implement increasingly innovative methods and tools that support the control, monitoring and quantification of emissions. This work describes the result of the research activity started in 2019 and still in full swing, through which the project team has structured innovative methods for monitoring pollutant emissions in airborne matrix, using UAV- based platforms. Specifically, the work describes two different lines of approach, the first aimed at measuring methane concentrations in airborne matrix, mainly dedicated to diffuse biogas emissions in MSW landfills. The second type of activity, on the other hand, is aimed at industrial sites of various kinds and is based on the measurement of the concentrations of specific pollutants, always in an aerosol matrix, such as fine dust, by means of a multi-tool sensor equipped on a drone. These protocols base their functionality both on the incessant research aimed at miniaturizing the sensors and making them more and more efficient and scalable in concert with the flexibility of the platforms and with the incessant research aimed at the knowledge of the phenomena to be observed. In fact, given the innovativeness of the method and noting the almost total absence of consolidated experiences from which to draw certain bases, the greatest effort has been made in the study first of all of the emission phenomenon to be observed and equally important in the interaction between the emission phenomenon, intervention ecosystem and relevant technology. Further effort in terms of research and implementation has been put into identifying the correct workflow of processing, analysis and interpretation of the datasets produced, not deriving from classic and consolidated methods, therefore with proven interpretations, but rather the result of innovative methods that therefore require specific skills of interpretation and enhancement of the data.

The amount of WEEE produced globally is increasing of almost 2 million tonnes per year. It is estimated that the nearly 60 million tonnes recorded in 2022 will become 75 by 2030. This waste is a real urban mine, and it is every day more urgent to find circular economy solutions for its proper treatment. Osai GreenTech has thus designed and built RE4M - Recycling for Manufacturing, a plant born from the experience gained by OSAI within the European project ADIR, capable of extracting and selecting electronic components in a fully automated way, intended for the recovery of precious metals and critical materials. In addition, the Parent Company OSAI A.S. Sp.A. Società Benefit is taking part in the consortium led by Erion in the New-Re Project, for the realisation of a semi-automated dismantling system of permanent magnets and PCBs contained in end-of-life hard disks.

LOD Srl is a testing laboratory accredited by ACCREDIA (accr. no. 1744) for olfactory sensory tests and a spin-off of the University of Udine.

These analyses are crucial for the verification of the correct odorization and odorability degree for fuel gases and are mandatory for the introduction of biomethane into the grid, according to UNI/TR 11537:2019: this TR puts the onus on the producer of biomethane to verify its compliance the quality requirements for correct odorization, identifying rinoanalysis as the reference analytical methodology.

This activity is conducted within a specifically designed test chamber, and through specially trained panelists.

Day 3 – Thursday 11th April 2024

This SPOKE initiative focuses on envisioning a groundbreaking factory concept that is yet to be realized—an innovative facility that is zero-waste, pollution-free, energy-neutral, closed-loop, nature-centric, human-centred, socially-conscious, inclusive, completely safe, self-sustaining, and self-regenerative. This novel factory concept aims to propel the Made in Italy brand into the realm of Urban Factories and potentially extend its reach to Factories in Space!

The SPOKE Objectives are:

  • Technologies, the resources, the archetypes for designing – and executing – the Circular and Sustainable Factory of the future– based on new regenerative natural-based AM systems in which the asset lifecycle is systematically closed– to allow maximum resource reuse and rational energy use.
  • Implement laboratories and Proof-of-Concepts for evaluating and transferring to industry the achievable solutions for the Circular and Sustainable Factory of the future.

This meeting presents a chance to gain insights into the research endeavours conducted by this SPOKE.
