Degree in Geology (1991, cum laude) received from the University of Modena (Italy).

PhD degree in Mineralogy and Crystallography (1995) received from the University of Modena (Italy). Spent part of the PhD time at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), Brookhaven Nat lab (NY, USA).

Post-doc at the Chemistry Department of The Stony Brook University (NY, USA) in 1996-1997.

Full Professor of Mineralogy since February 2005.

Past President of the Degree Council of Geology courses of the University of Modena (2008-2013).

Past Head of the Chemical and Earth Sciences Department, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) 2018-2021.

Pertinent research activity:

Basic and applied research on mineral fibers (namely asbestos), their characterization with lab instrumentation and synchrotron radiation, toxicity/pathogenicity potential.

Member of the Commission on Crystallographic Computing of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) 2003-2005 and 2006-2009; Associated Editor of the of the scientific “American Mineralogist” 2001-2005.

Chair of the European Mineralogical Union School “Mineral fibres: crystal chemistry, chemical-physical properties, biological interaction and toxicity” Modena (Italy) June 19-23, 2017.
