University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE), whose origins date back to around 1175, is organized according to a “network model” which has very few examples in Italy. To date, around 27,000 students (the number refers to the 2021-22 academic year, but does not include Postgraduate and PhD students) are enrolled in the 92 study programs active at UNIMORE, including different disciplinary areas, from the human sciences and social sciences to engineering and technology, and from the physical and natural sciences to medicine and the life sciences. UNIMORE is composed of 13 Departments, 7 libraries, 5 service centres, 16 interdepartmental or intra-university research centres, 1 geophysical observatory and 7 museums. Research doctorates and specialization schools also represent an important part of UNIMORE’s educational offer. There are 17 Doctoral Courses active at the University, with over 550 students enrolled; they intend to provide the necessary skills to carry out highly qualified research activities in public and private subjects, as well as qualifying ones in the exercise of the liberal professions. More than 700 male and female students are currently enrolled in the Specialization Schools, an academic course lasting a maximum of six years at the end of which the qualification of “Specialist” is obtained. These courses are divided into schools in the medical sector and schools in the chemical sector. UNIMORE is located in the heart of one of Europe’s wealthiest and most dynamic regions, which is world-renowned for its production of mechanical parts, engines, sports cars (e.g. Ferrari and Maserati) as well as for its agro-food sector, ceramic tiles and manufacturing industries.

The “Enzo Ferrari” Engineering Department – DIEF – has been active since 06.30.2012. It collects the cultural heritage built by the Faculty of Engineering of Modena, founded in 1990, and by the Departments of Materials and Environmental Engineering, Information Engineering and Mechanical and Civil Engineering. A single organizational structure now coordinates the educational objectives of the pre-existing Faculty with the theoretical and applied research and technology transfer activities developed by the previous Departments and by the Interdepartmental Centers associated with them. Teaching, research and technology transfer are the pillars of the “Enzo Ferrari” Engineering Department. The main sectors or macro-areas of research in which DIEF operates are: •Civil and Environmental •Electronics and Telecommunications •Informatics •Materials •Mechanics and Vehicles. Starting from 2021-2022 academic year, DIEF is also involved in an interuniversity bachelor course in Human Centered Medical System Engineering together with University of Verona and Trento.
