In 2003, LOD was born within the framework of the Friuli Innovation Technological Park, as a Laboratory of Dynamic Olfactometry specialized in odors measurement.

As a spin-off of the university of Udine since 2007, LOD offers multiple services to public and private organizations, among which the quantifying of odorigenous emissions and evaluation of potential olfactive impacts.

Lod is currently located inside UNIUD LAB VILLAGE and part of the most qualified European laboratories as regards dynamic olfactometry: it supplies analyses on smells originating from all types of processes and of all types of nature, with the purpose of yielding objective data that allow quantifying the emitted odor.

LOD Srl is accredited by ACCREDIA (n. accr. 1744) according to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 for the execution of the following tests:

• Determination of the concentration of odor by dynamic olfactometry according to UNI EN 13725:2022;
• Odorization of domestic and similar gases – Part 3: Procedures for the definition of the olfactory characteristics of odorous fluids (Rhinoanalysis), according to UNI 7133-3:2023;
• Determination of odor in ambient air by field investigation – Part 1: Grid method (Field Inspection), according to UNI EN 16841-1:2017

Lod Srl is the only laboratory in Italy accredited at the same time for all three tests. This is the result of the different skills acquired by laboratory technicians starting from the measurement of odors, thanks also to the constant relationship with the University of Udine.

In addition to the accredited tests, LOD offers the following services:

• Odor protocol: correlation between odor concentration and related pollutants
• Dispersion models: mathematical simulations that allow describing odor and pollutants dispersion in a territory surrounding.
• Monitoring with electronic noses that are capable of measuring and recognizing an odor during fall-out, when it reaches sensitive receptors positioned at a given distance from a production facility.
• Evaluation of the intensity and tone of a smell This evaluation allows determining if an odor is pleasant or unpleasant.
• Counselling on norms and authorization support.
